The Historic Route 66 National Back Country Byway begins five miles south of Kingman at the McConnico exit off Interstate 40. To begin at the southern end, exit off Interstate 40 at the Topock/Golden Shores.

A beautiful desert stretch of Historic Route 66, Oatman Road begins south of the town of Kingman. It is a winding two-lane road that passes through 42 miles of Arizona's gorgeous desert terrain.

This remarkable setting, combined with the byway's exciting Western history, creates an feeling of the Old West that cannot be ignored. Several movies, including "How the West Was Won" and "Edge of Eternity," were filmed on location in Oatman, taking advantage of the town's picturesque street scene.

Take I-40 to exit 44, also know as Shinarump Drive. It is best to check your gas gauge before starting this adventure as it is a long, long way to the next gas station!

Go Back to Crazy Fred's truck stop on the other side of I-40 if you need gas. There is NONE ahead. This is a sparely populated area.

Go west about 1/8 the mile, turn left on Oatman Highway, Mohave County Highway 10. As you follow this road up into the mountains, be aware that there are few if any guardrails along the road.

Be careful to pay attention to your driving. The road is legally accessible by any vehicle under 40 feet in length. This is not a road for large motorhomes.

Travelers are advised that the portion of the highway passing through the Black Mountains are very narrow, two-lane with no shoulders. You will find extremely tight switchbacks and many steep drop-offs.

Wide vehicles and vehicles over 30 feet in length should use extreme caution when driving this road. Also be alert for motorcycles, this is a great place for touring motorcyles from across the USA and foreign, individual and groups.

Now the good news, if you keep your speed down, this is a spectacular drive in the old west.
